Witham Rugby Club want to make sure as many Essex primary schoolchildren in the area as possible discover rugby and have the chance to join a club and maybe one day represent the county or even their country. So, with around 70 youngsters already involved on Sundays, they decided to take the game to the kids and at the start of the new school year went into the local schools to deliver some fun coaching. They also funded a bus for two days to pick all the children up from school and give them a free taster session at the club, with an invite back to the Sunday session.

Working with RFU Rugby Development Officer Matt Watts, Justin Chesson, Witham’s Club Coach Coordinator, and President Nick Redfern, not only took the game to the schools but also organised a
Rugby Ready course for the club coaches and interested schoolteachers.

Said Justin: “We are a Saracens Partner Club and want to make sure that all children in our area get the chance to see what rugby’s all about and to join a local club, which will stand them in good stead for life.”

The club’s coaches are sponsored by Haart independent lettings and estate agent who are helping youngsters find a home in their local club.

Said Matt Watts: “It’s been great seeing Witham coaches taking the game into schools and the enjoyment of the children as many picked up a rugby ball for the first time. It’s a really good model of best practice locally.”
