At Morley RFC a girls’ event for U13s and U15s, had 330 players attending from 30 schools and at Ilkley RFC the boys’ event was enjoyed by 940 boys from 36 schools.

In advance, 70 Young Match Officials were trained, all from CBRE All Schools new to rugby over recent years.

From those, 18 were identified to become members of the West Yorkshire Referee Academy, The Academy will run a workshop in June , led by Community Rugby Coach (CRC) Carl Paterson, and the new young officials will be mentored through to taking the England Rugby Refereeing Award, and the chance to referee club rugby.

At Ilkley, Area Manager Mike Barnett delivered a workshop on Age Grade Rugby to key members of Yorkshire RFU, Age Grade representatives, a County Schools Union representative, and Academy staff from Yorkshire Carnegie.

The County Schools Union also worked with the local delivery team to help organise a free CPD for school staff at Cleckheaton RUFC, delivered by CRC Evan Woodworth to improve knowledge of contact skills around the tackle, ruck and scrum.

The whole intiative gave a great day for young players and useful opportunities to those supporting their development, with a great deal of hard work and collaboration behind the scenes.

Said Rugby Development Officer Andy Fradgley: “It was great to see so many school players enjoy developing their skills and all playing with tremendous spirit.  Hopefully, we will gain more young club players, more young match officials and a better understanding of age grade rugby across the county.”
