RugbySafe, supported by Simplyhealth, is the RFU’s overarching player
safety and wellbeing programme. It puts player welfare at the heart of the
game and covers how to organise and manage the game so that it is played
in a safe and enjoyable manner.
These training resources are definitely NOT a replacement for the face to face EFARU course. It is essential that anyone who takes on the role as a first aider in rugby is appropriately qualified to a minimum of Level 3 Emergency First Aid or equivalent.
We recommend that first aiders undertake refresher training every 6 – 12 months in between the 3-year qualification renewal. This ensures they remain able and competent at carrying out key first aid skills, especially basic life support skills such as CPR.
These resources can be used on an individual basis or as part of group refresher sessions organised internally by clubs.
The EFARU video series covers the main emergency first aid topics and demonstrates how to carry out key first aid skills.
We encourage everyone to learn basic life support skills, irrespective of their role in rugby, a first aider, coach, player or parent.
There are more than 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests across the UK every year but less than one in ten people survive. The effective and speedy use of CPR and a defibrillator can increase the chance of survival by over 60%.
Free online basic life support skills training tools include the Resuscitation Council UK’s Lifesaver and UK Coaching’s Learn to Save a Life.
For information on how to purchase a defibrillator visit Toolkit 2: RugbySafe Essential Guides, Forms & Templates.
Lifesaver is a FREE cutting-edge way to learn lifesaving skills anytime, anywhere. Through action-packed scenarios, you’ll be thrown into the heart of the action as you make the crucial decisions and learn the essential skills needed to save a life. In an emergency, would you know what to do?
The scenarios work together to cover the first three steps of the chain of survival: calling an ambulance, performing CPR, and using a defibrillator. They also highlight what to do when someone is choking, and how to put someone in the recovery position.
Playing Lifesaver is your opportunity to learn what an emergency looks like and how you should respond to it. By learning essential CPR skills, you have the power to help increase the number of people who could survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK.
