What was it that got you into refereeing?
I was volunteering at my local club as a coach when my local CRC suggested I go on an upcoming referee course. I hadn’t really considered refereeing but went along to increase my knowledge of the game. I then discovered that I really enjoyed refereeing!
What’s the most rewarding thing about referee?
For me, it’s about meeting new people and making new friends through travelling to different clubs. I enjoy the mental challenge of refereeing and having to think quickly and clearly in order to make accurate decisions. I also get a strong sense of satisfaction after playing a good piece of advantage that allows a team to go on to score.

This is a photo of me and fellow referees after refereeing the Midlands Senior Vase final at Oundle RFC. The score line was 61-33 in favour of the hosts despite weather conditions. One of the best games I’ve ever refereed and I was lucky to have the best seat in the house! I worked with a brilliant team made up of other referees from NLD which was great. Everyone was happy and chatty in the bar afterwards and both teams enjoyed some social fun together. It truly represented what rugby is all about to me.
Tell us about your local refereeing society?
The NLDRFURS (Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire &Derbyshire RFU Referees Society) has been great in supporting me from the beginning. They assigned me a coach and gave me regular assessments. They made it clear what I needed to do to improve my refereeing skills and they also helped me to prepare on and off the pitch. Thanks to them I was able to referee at the Dubai 7s, for which I can’t thank them enough.
What’s refereeing done for you personally
Refereeing has given me confidence to make a decision and stick with it. It’s also helped me to be confident when meeting new people. The biggest thing it has done for me, is to give me the ability to keep my head and to take control of unknown and pressurised situations. This is partially due to starting refereeing so young and taking control of matches where some of the players were double my age plus a bit.
